What is SAD?

For some people, fall and winter can be a time of more depression, irritability, weight gain, and more. Called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), it affects approximately 4% to 6% of people living in northern lattitudes. A circadian rhythm disorder, it is caused by reduced light levels during the fall and winter. When photoreceptors in the eyes sense the reduced light levels, it affects the production of different biochemicals in the body. Two of the primary biochemicals it affects are serotonin and melatonin. While serotonin levels drop, melatonin levels become skewed, and it affects are overall feelings of well-being, and depression sets in for the winter. Although SAD is very similar to clinical depression, unlike clinical depression, the symptoms gradualy improve with the return of light in the spring and summer.

Light therapy is one of the most effective treatments for SAD on the market today without the undesirable side-effects of anti-depressants. A class of anti-depressants called Seratonin Selective Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) is commonly prescribed for SAD. Not only can SSRIs cause nausea, dry mouth, weight gain, sexual side-effects, and more, in some instances, the treatment can be worse than the disorder. Tragically, in some people, they can cause an increased risk for suicide and violent behavior.

Although SAD lights have been clinically-proven to be just as effective as anti-depressants in treating SAD, some people don't like the looks of a SAD light box sitting in their living area. If you feel this way, the Daylight Sky Lamp DL2000 is the perfect solution.

Hi Deborah

Yes, SAD lights really work. It doesn't matter which SAD light you look on at Amazon, time and time again, there are many postive customer reviews, and it sure the heck beats all the negative side effects of SSRIs. Thanks for commenting.
